The following is a summary of the contracts entered into by the General Government for the construction of Railways under the Immigration and Public Works Aot. 1870, from Ist July, 1872, to 30th June, 1873 (shillings and pence are omitted) :—

EXPORTS AND IMPORTS. The following figures give the value of a few of the principal exports and imports for this Colony, during

A glance at the above figures shows how much progress the Colony has jet to make iv developing and manufacturing its mineral and vegetable resources; the greater bulk of the abore list of imported goods might easily be produced within our own borders; and if instead of fighting for politioal plaoe and power our legislators devoted their time and abilities to pushing on the manufacturing industries that have been started in this country, and inducing others to spring into existence, this Colony would soon take its position as second to none of the British Colonies, and our laboring classes would become more happy and contented with the prospect of permanent employment for them and their children. The total exports for last year amounted to £5,190,665. and the imports to £5,142,951; the balance in favor of the exports being £17,714.
