Chhistchtjhoh, January 25. —Hops (Kent's 1872) are in moderate request at Is. 9d. to 2a. Holders of old are asking Is 2d to Is 5d without meeting with any support. The merchants are offering 4s for wheat; and at this figure sales have been reported, but the parcels were not of sufficient magiitude to fix quotations. At 4s 3d large purchasss could be made. This seems to be the general price asked by the farmers. Flour i 3 being quoted at £12 to £12 10s, according to quantity purchased, the trade doing beinj confined to local requirements. Barley will be very scarce this season, and anything like a fair malting sample fetches 5s 6d, and even up to 63 has been reported. New oats stand firm at 2s for early delivery. In provisions, butter has advanced during the week, and 6d to 6£d has been paid, while several are holding for higher rates. The demand for cheese is improving; good samples fetch from 5d to- 5Jd. Fat cattle (prime), 17s 6d per lOOlbs. A Bmall number of prime long-wools made 12s, and merino ■wethers ranged from 6a 6d to Bs. Lambs are in, plentiful supply at 8s to 9s. Our quotation for mutton is If d for merino, and 2d for cross-bred of first quality.
Melbouene.—The Argus of January 18th, reports: "Breadatuffs are not active, and sales of flour are of a limited character. Quotations for fciade parcels racge from £13 10s to £14. Wheat is steady at 5a 3d to 5s 4:1 for new Victorian. Oats are quoted at 3s Id to 3s 4d for common to good feeding qualities. Maize is worth 2s 9d. There is a very good inquiry for sugar. Privately we hear of about 700 bags yellow counters having bean sold at £34. Tbe entire cargo of Java, ex Herzog Ernst, amounting to 14,378 mats, all more or less damaged, was cleared off at. prices ranging from £32 to £37 per ton. Teas meet with a good inquiry, and some considerable lines are said to be under treaty. Blasting powder is attracting more attention. We hear of a parcel of 35 tons of Samoa's having changed hands on private terms. Oilmen's stores still meet with favor ; a good inquiry is reported for pints and half-pints salad oils, and sales of second brands have been made at 9s 6d and 5s 6d respectively. For lib salmon, which Has advanced in California, improved rates are likely to be obtained. Considerable sales of plaid vestas have been made at 59 10|-d, and several hundred cases Tandsticker's have changed hands at up to 2a 9d. Kerosene oil is beginning to move off again ; we hear of 1000 cases having been placed at Is lljd. In liquids we note sales of bottled ales at 13s. Duff Gordon's sherries have found buyers at prices rising,' according to qualities, from £38 to £60. Kopkie'a port wines have been disposed of at £45 to £60. There was a good attendance of buyers and others interested in the wool trade at the sale held to-day at Messrs. Hastings, Cunningham, and Cos. A catalogue of 2500 bales was submitted to competition, and 1370 bales were disposed of. The biddings for greasy were keen, and the prices realised ■were slightly iv favor of the sellers.
