NELSON COLLEGE.

THE ANNUAL SPORTS. On the Ist and 4th December, the annual sports of the students took place on the College grounds. Each day there was a large and fashionable attendance of spectators. The sports consisted of long, flat, hurdle, sack, pick-a-back, and three-legged races; jumping and throwing the cricket ball. All the games were well contested, and in those open to all comers, not a few outsiders took opportunity of entering; while others were so pleased with the persevering efforts of the pupils, and the training they had evidently undergone, that sums were subscribed on the ground for extra races and extra prizes. " Little Vickerman," whose skill at high leap reached 4ft. 4£in, his own height being only 4 feet 6 inches, produced in two minutes upwards of a guinea, as ahandicap to the smart little fellow who outstripped all his competitors. The good feeling among the boys was well shown in the pleasant praises with which the victor was often greeted by some of those who had unsuccessfully competed with him. The prize 9, which were varied and with hardly an exception well chosen and suitable, were delivered by Mrs. Johnston, of Wellington, who after pleasantly concluding her task, woeived three cordial cheers, which were repeated in favor of Mr. Simmons, the Head Master, and of Mr. Justice Johnston, the late visitor, by whom these sports were first inaugurated.
