THE COLONIST.

NELSON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25, 18fi8 THE ELECTION FOR TKE CITl r. It was supposed that the contest would be a verycloseone, forasthepolline; day approached, each party expressed itself suro of success, founded on calculations and "careful study" of the roll of voters. Placards and squibs, containing charges and countercharges, of some of which we believe the last has not yet been heard, were circulated all over the town ; and respective committee rooms, —where relays of cabs and carriages arrived and departed under orders for electors,—were the centres of attraction for many. The following ia the state of the poll at four o'clock :— Provincial Odd-Fellows' „, , , Hall. Hall. TotaL Mr. Edwards... 187 115 302 Mr. Shcphard.. 139 75 214 326 190 516 Majority for Mr. Edwards, 88. The.total number polled was 516, being 43 more than was polled in the City on the occasion, of the last general election in February, Ibdii, when Mr. Stafford had 370, Mr. Curtis 24»,.and Mr. Luckie 212, giving, a. total of 473 some three years ago, against 516 on the present occasion.
