ESCAPE OF PRISONERS FROM THE HAUHAUS.
It appenrs that Wi Pere, with several other friendly native prisoners, who had been captured by To Kooti's force, had been patiently awaiting an attack by our forces in order to embrace any opportunity of escape which such an occasion might offer. This happened at length, the'r guards joined in the late light at To Karotu, and the door of escape was open. The men who escaped at this time, were Wi Pere, Hakoparere Puhara, Turn at i to Maiwa, and Paora King!; these people, together with Wi Pore's wife and clrldren, have gone towards Opotiki or Punapahore, where they ■will seek refuge in the meantime with the loyal chief Wiremu Kingi te Kawau. Three women (escaped prisoners) arrived a few days ago, at the redoubt at Turanganui, after wandering about in the bush for six days, subsisting entirely on roots and berries. It is supposed that o'hers who have succeeded in effecting their escape f.'om Te Kooti may still be scattered about in the bu3h. — Ilaiohe'.i Bay Herald.
