THE CITY X OF NELSON. j GenTLEmen, —Numerous Electors of high-standing j having respecti'ullv expressed (heir wish that f should become a MRUHER of tho HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES instead of Mr. Stafford, whose s--.h for Nelson has evaporated ; I feel inclined t'j do ni, and proceed at once to lay before you those political views which under the present circumstances are best suited to the occasion. The danger of roducod salaries, with a falling revenue to pay them, demands that vigorous economy in every branch, of public works, which alone'can secure the high position oi' our public service. Simplicity in book-keeping, and prompt, payments of all higher salaries, on or bofora every First, is one of tho most important means to offset a re-assuring reform, and beneficial calm in oui1 political circles. I am determined to use my utmost efforts in this direction. At the same time, I will, as soon as elected, unite my best endeavors with those of my Christian and Political brethren to support the Native Wah, and put a stop to those grasping propensities which, unfortunately, are only too common amongst a certain class of settlers who do not draw public salaries; while the moral support of our greatest politicians, our contractors, and of Exeter Hall is sure to be on our side. The preservation of New Zealand as one united Colony, under its present beneficial and remunerative Government, appears essential to its own progress in land and honors, and all attempts to separate this Happy Family, under any pretext, would meet my firmest opposition, even to the extent of boxing-gloves. As Provincial institutions have nearly playod out their important part, I would only allow their existence ns long as the position of a well-paid Government employe can be upheld with dignity, for, after the sale of all public lands, and the building of railways in the air, they will collapse in the most natural way. Although having the interests of the Colony at heart, I should guard with jealous care all the good things coming from Nelson, and try strenuously to procure the retention of every penny ths spending of which might affect my own just, claims. Standing above parties, and having no other objoct but a good public situation, I would give an independent support to any policy best calculated to advance tho prosperity of tho Colony, whenover that is con' sistent with the advancement of my own. During tho whole session of the Assembly I should be found in my easy chair, my arrangements with the waiters being such that sherry and cigars should be brought to me. i After my election I shall have plenty of time to enter more fully on those topics at which I now i merely glance, and to answer such questions as will not interfere with my repose. I have the honor to be, Gontlemon, Your Obedient Servant, i 770 JOHNNY GBABHAtL, (K.Q.B, in tpe.)
