WeUjINGTon, Tuesday. Napier telegrams state that the allies have ceased pursuit, of the rebels, partly through exhaustion and scarcity of supplies, and partly through being disgusted with Whitmore-
The expedition has virtually collapsed. Captain Tanner's cavalry has returned to Napier. Wednesday, December 9.
The steamer Wanganui arrived early yesterday morning and left again at fdhv o'clock in the after-
noon. The greatest consternation existed there. The Wnnganui brought forty passengers, mostly women and children. The people of Wa"figanni are enclosing a large space round the town ».« ■% citadel and refuse, at a cost of £400—the same being raised by subscriptions. A movement here is talked of to assist. Commodore Lambert stats* that General Chute is expected daily from Australia. Lord Belmore willing to send troops.
