PRIZE RIFLE FIRING.
Our Voluuteei's have, during the last two or three days been competing for the prizes given by the Provincial Government, with the following result: — No 1 City Rifles. The rifles were won by Messrs. Murrell, Drew, and Gully. Their scores were— Private E. Murrell ... ... ... 42 Private H. Drew ... 39 Corporal L. Gully 38 Wai.aiea Company. Messrs. John Arnold (39 points), J. Newth (37 points), R. Fowler (37 points) won the rifles. I Wakaptjaka Artillery.
We believe Gunner Manson and Corporal GiF take the prizes falling to this company. City Artillery Company. This company fired yesterday. It will be seen by a reference to the score which wo append, that the shooting in most instances was very indifferent; this was attributable, to a certain extent, to the rain which fell heavily before the conclusion of the match ; and here wo might state that the weather was most unfavorable when the City Rifles and the Waimea Company fired, for a strong wind prevailed on both occasions. The rifles given to the Artillery were won by Corporal Smith and Gunners Dobb and Adams, Gunners Barnett and Connal having won the rifles hi previous competition. Here is the score : —
Tho Cadet Companies will fire for the two prizes falling to them to-day, and the firing for the Championship of Nelson Province will come off (weather permitting) on Tuesday next, commencing at 10 a.m.
