THE VACANCY FOR THE CITY.

To the Editor of The Colonist,

Sir, —I perceive with surprise that Mr. Shepherd does not intend to meet the electors until the day of nomination. Such reserve in tho explanation of his views, if ever allowable, can only be so in the ca?e of oto of our follow townsmen whoso opinions have become familiar to us by frequent intercourso. It is only by the asking and answering of questions on many points of policy that the electors can arrive at a satisfactory conclusion as to whether they shall support the candidate, or set up another. It would, for instance, be of much interest to the electors to know whether Mr. Shepherd would accept office Under Government, and whether, in that case he would stand his election afresh. This is one among many questions on which it concerns them to be informed, and it must be obvious to everyone that it is rather late in the day to do this at the nomination. Yours, &c., A. Posee. Nelson, December 7, 1868.
