Melancholy Accident on Board the s.s. Lady Darling.—Death of the Captain.—The steamer Lady Darling, which left here last week for Hokitika, arrived in harbor yesterday morning with her flags half-mast high. Upon enquiring the cause, we ascertained that a melancholy and fatal accident had occured on board the previous night, by which the captain of the vessel lost his life. The Lady Darling was on her passage to Canterbury, and wasmaking but little head way against the strong S.E wind blowing at the time, and the high sea running. Captain Johnston was assisting the man at the wheel to steer the vessel, when a sudden roll wrenched the handles from their grasp, and the wheel was sent flying round with tremendous velocity; the seaman was lifted a considerable distance with the force, and one of the handles struck the captain behind the ear, and death was instantaneous. The chief officer deemed it advisable to make for the nearest port, and accordingly the vessel was brought to Wellington, where she arrived yesterday morning. We regret to state that Captain Johnston leaves a wife and six children, at present residing in New Brunswick, to deplore their loss. — Wellington Advertiser.

The Wellington Advertiser says that there were nine steamers in harbor on 23rd June :—The Queen and Wonga Wonga; H.M.S. Eclipse ; the Tararua, Prince Alfred, and Egmont; the Wellington, Wanganui, and the Lndy Darling. The Auckland was to leave Melbourne on the 15th for Auckland, Napier, and Wellington. The clipper barque Frederick, Captain Velgian, was laid on at Melbourne for Nelson, Wellington, and Taranaki, to meet with quick despatch.
