THE COLONIST NELSON, FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1865.
His Excellency the Governor arrived at Wellington, from Auckland province, by H.M.S. Eclipse, at a late hour on "Wednesday night.
The Parliament of Victoria,. by a majority of twenty-nine against twenty-five, have rejected a bill introduced by Mr. Harker for the abolition of all State-aid to religion. The debate on the second reading was an animated one, and lasted three hours. The Ministry, it appeared, were divided on the question, and partly voted for and partly against the bill. Sixteen members of the House absented themselves on the plea of urgent business, the belief being that they do not wish to vote on the measure at all. A great deal of interest centres in the subject throughout Victoria, and the popular feeling is apparently in favor of Mr. Harker's measure.
The Provincial Council re-assembles on Tuesday, after an adjournment of a fortnight. ;'
