Steam Eiee ENGiKE.~The Home Neivs contains the following description of a steam flro engine. It received the award of Jury at the Netherlands Exhibition. Makers, Shand, Mason, and Co.:—"Timo from lighting fire to delivery of a jet of water, 11 minutes ; size of jet, li inch ; average distance at which a solid jet was maintained horizontally 148 ft. 9in.; greatest horizontal distance 203 ft.; time to fill tank containing 1777 gallons, 6 minutes, 42 seconds (or 265 gallons thrown in each minute) ; total time of working, one hour, without stopping j weight, 1 ton 12cwt. 2qrs.: price, £500 ; award, the gold medal and 500 guilders." Could not our local firebrigade, which wants resuscitation, contrive to get an engine of this description ? It would prove a cheap instrument. . Gold Mininghn Auckland.—The Kapanga Gold Mining Company has forwarded to Auckland 60 ounces of gold, the proceeds from a crushing of eight tons of stone. The company is now taking out stone from a rich leader in several drivc9, and a larger return may bo expected in a few days.— Southern Cross.
