TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS.—THE NEW POSTAL LAW. * # * The new postal law which places a postage of one penny on each newspaper passing through the Post-Office requires us to intimate that from and after the Ist of February an additional charge of 2s. 2d. per quarter will bo made for The Colonist to those subscribers who receive the paper through the post. We do not anticipate that the tax will last long ; but, meantime, while it continues in operation, we shall use every possible opportunity of supplying our up-country subscribers without making use of the post-office, so as to save the impost. As many of our country subscribers can judge better than we can of any available private means of conveying newspapers to them, we shall be glad to receive clear instructions on this head from all outlying subscribers, whom the tax will otherwise affect. The tax must be borne by newspapers sent to the neighboring colonies, to England, and other places abroad, as well as by those posted within this colony. Our rates of subscription will be as follows while the tax continues operative : — In advance. Credit, or, during Quarter. Subscription pee Quarter—7s. 6d. 10s. Additional, if posted ... 2s. 2d. Monthly Summary, if posted to order — including postage, 7s. per annum. It will be seen that this postage rate will entail still further preliminary outlay of money on our part, and we therefore request all our subscribers ■who are in arrear to p»»y their accounts without delay, so aa to save further trouble. ' THE COLONIST,' published every Tuesday and Friday morning, is regularly forwarded to England, Sydney, Melbourne, Geclong, Adelaide, Queensland, and Tasmania, and is circulated tliroughoufe Australia generally. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION. Per Quarter, Paid in Advance, or during the currency of the quarter 7s. 6d. Ditto, Credit 10s. The terms for advertisements are —eight lines, 4s. ; every line above eight, 3d ; every subsequent insertion will be charged one half of the above prices. Every advertisement not exceeding fifteen words will be charged at the uniform rate of Is. for each insertion. Quarterly advertisers will be charged according to a scale to be ascertained on application at this office. To insure insertion, advertisements must not be sent in later than Seven o'clock on the day previous to publication. Notices of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, from authentic sources, are inserted gratis. It is particularly requested that any irregularity in the delivery of the ' Colonist' may be notified at thia office, in order that steps may be taken to prevent a recurrence of the annoyance. Monthly Summary.—This resume of the month's news, prepared for the homeward mail on the 13th of each month, will be carefully dispatched to any part of the world upon receipt of full instructions at this office.
