GORSE HEDGES.

To the Editor of The Colonist.

Sir—The inhabitants of Nelsvi) are imlobted to you for the manner in which you have discussed the vexed question and the dangwou- one of gorse hedges, which ate dermitted to flourish in untrimmed luxuriance in many places of the town. I, along with many others, was glad to see the way you have knocked on the head the absurd idea that hedges which are allowed to spread half-way over a Btieet can bo called trimmed in term* of the Pro. vincial Council's Act; an idea which I was not surprised to find re-echoed by the Secretary of the Board of Works, who, whether he does or not, ought at least to know better.

But, Sir, why does not the Board of Works compel the cleaving of the streets where these are overgrown? The Board has charge of all Btreets in the city, and whether the Gorse Hedges Act gives them power to proceed against defaulters or not, they have, in terms of their own constitution, the power of compelling the abatement or removal of nil dangerous street obstructions, without reference to the Gorse Hedges Act at all. If 1 planted a lot of trees on the boundary of my ground and year by year gradually took three or four feet from the road to plant more trees until I had a dozen feet of extra ground belonging to the road and filled by my trees, I should think the Board o Works would very quickly come down upon me, and order me to remove my trees. It is the same thing with gotse hedges, and it is unpitdonal'le humbug to say the oases differ when the question is considered. I am, &c. H. A. W. THORN. Nelson, Wednesday.
