CANTERBURY.
A Strange Burglar.—The Press tells a story of two brothers who in a state of nudity were found by a constable shouting for help in front of Mrs. O'Hara's boarding house, in Christchurch, and armed with sticks at the time. They told the officer that a burglar was in the bedroom. He went and apprehended^—a large tom-ot /_ The immigrant ship Captain Cook which arrived in Lyttelton on September 2nd, has been placed in quarantine, there having been severe fever on board. There were fifteen deaths on board namely:—Martha Harris, aged 63; Lydia Cooper, 40; Jane Keane, 25; Charles Metcalf, 18; Thomas Cooper, 35; Ellen Waterhouse, 21; Clara Barker, 22; and 9 children. There were 200 immigrants on board. The Lyttelton Times mentions that at a meeting of the working carpenters of Christchurch, to consider the propriety of requesting their employers to increase their wages; the following resolution was passed:-" That carpenters' wages be raised from 10s. to 12s. per day, consequent on the present high prices of provisions." The Provincial Council of Canterbury has voted £1,500 for a geological survey of the province. Two Deserters Drowned at Lyttelton. —At one o'clock on Saturday morning (Aug. 22nd) three men endeavored to make their escape from the ship British Crown. They (the boatswain and two men) succeeded in lowering a boat, and upon letting themselves down capsized it; all three were thrown into the water, and only one of them succeeded in saving his life by clinging to a boat sent to their rescue from the Epsom. The bodies of the two men drowned have not yet been found; their names are M'Pherson and Linden.— The Press.
