CRICRET.

[from a correspondent.] Cricket and rifle shooting seem to be the order of the day. On Saturday, the 12th instant, tho return match between the Ranzau and Spring Grove clubs was played in a paddock near the Red Hovse, Waimea East. The weather during the week being very changeable, doubts were entertained as to the probability of a fine day; howeyer, the day proved better than was anticipated, and about ten a.m. the wickets were pitched by the umpires. The toss having been won hy the Ranzau club, they sent their opponents in. In the first innings the Spring Grove men made a score of 40; the Ranzau 93. The second innings the Spring Grove made 80, total 120; leaving the Ranzau men only 28 to win. The Ranzau men then took the bat, and being over-confident of success, played incautiously, and lost the game by 10 runs, making only 17. As will be seen by the following score five men allowed themselves to be run out. The bowling of Mr. A. Rutherford of Spring Grove, and Mr. T. Coleman of Ranzau was very good. The play on the whole was very good, except the last innings of Ranzau, the game being terminated about sunset. The company, including several new players, adjourned to the Red Horse, where ample justice was done to a splendid dinner, provided by the hostess of the said house. Mr. C. P. Kearns, president ofthe Ranzau club, was called to the chair, Mr. H. W. Perryman, president of the Spring Grove club, to the vicechair. Making allowance for a little jangling, which took place with a few, the company separated in peace, to meet again on Easter Monday, to play the conquering game. It is to be regretted that_ the slightest disagreement should occur, particularly with two young club 3, respecting the noble game of cricket. lUnzau.
