Commercial.

Colonist Office, Thursday evening. TriK business of month dating from our last report, has on the whole certainly improved, the arrival of the Ravonscraig fully supplying the market with many articles then wanting : and the almost daily expected arrival of the Ardencraig with an entire cargo for this port, will entirely close our small market against the imports from Australia or adjoining

colonies, except for sugars, colonial soap and candles. f.iroceries—Our markets /ire now fully supplied, with tho exception of dried fruits, which wou;d leave i fair margin to the imports. Liquids—Geneva onh scarce. Sugar—The market bare, but largo supplies looked for per steamer. Bottled Beer—Both ale and porter good brand and generally in demand. Cereals—The crop of wheat is now all in and housed ; the price given for wheat, first quality, is from 6s> 6d to 7s at the mills, and flour £18 per ton of 20001bs is in tolerable supply, and although there will be none for export, we think there will be enough come forward to supply the wants of the community. Chrome and Copper Ore—Per Queen of India our first direct shipment to London of about 400 tons chrome and 50 tons of copper ore, will sail from hence in about three weeks (her light freight being about 1200 bales wool); we shall then have a fall report on the market value of these minerals and should it only prove satisfactory, we have no doubt that capitalists will be found to commence working other mines of these minerals in the immediate vicinity of Nelson, and which are well known to contain almost unbounded quantities of these ores. The West Coast gold-fields are steadily improving, and the accounts, as far as we are able to learn, satisfactory to the diggers ;—-about 600 ounces from these diggings alone goes forward by the present mail steamer from the Union Bank for the purpose of mintage. Coals—The spirited proprietor of some new mines at Pakawau confidantly assures us that he will be able to deliver any quantity for domestic and steam purposes in the course of a few months, which will materially effect the present shipments from the Australian provinces.
