LYTTELTON.
As a whole (says the Lyttdton Times), the harvest promises well, and should we be blessed with a fino
month, the favmeu will have no cause to complain that a bountiful providence has failed to reward his labors. We are glad to hear good accounts of dairy farming, and that the export of cheese is likely to show a marked increase during the coming year ; considering the sure and profitable market always offering for this kind of produce and the name already gained by' the province for its cheese, it is a matter of surprise that a greater impetus has not been given to the production of an article of export which commands us ready a market and gives as large a profit as anything that is shipped from Lyttelton. The present season's clip of wool is fast finding its way down to the various shipping places, and it is gratifying to note that those who are able to judge, describe it as superior in quantity and quality to that of previous years, a large proporion being well washed and got up with greater care than formerly. The complaints made by the London Wool Brokers of a deleterious coloring substance existing in the New Zealand wool, which it was impossible to got rid of, generally are believed to refer to " corrosive sublimate," a specific which has been largely used in the Nelson district for the destmctiou of scab. The Mermaid and the Evening Star are filling up rapidly. The former has now about, 1400 bales on board and the latter about 800. Both ships are pressing the wool, and will therefore take larger freights than left this port last year. Ten mares and geldings, ex Fanny a Garrigues from Auckland fetched from £18 10s. to jg4B a head, the average being £30 10s. On Saturday, the 19th inst., the remainder of the lot ex Shamrock from the same place consisting of nine mares and geldings varying from £32 to £45, and averaging IDs. each.
