Waimea-west, January 9th, 1861. 81 TO the ELECTORS of the WAIMEA ■*- DISTRICTS. Gentlemen—l wish to announce to you that I intend coming forward as a candidate for your suffrages for a seat in the House of Representatives. You have perhaps heard that I intended to become a candidate to represent the Suburbs, and it is therefore necessary that I should state how it happens that I now offer myself as a candidate for the Waimea districts. After I had addressed you at Richmond on the proceedings j ■of the late session, we heard that Mr. Saunders was to be a candidate for your suffrages, and I intended to ■contest the election with him, but expected to be ■asked by the electors to do so. In this expectation I ■was probably wrong, as it appears to be the usual practice in English elections that the former members if they wish to be re-elected, come forward without a requisition. But the electors of the Suburbs asked me to become a candidate for their district, and as I had represented it before as part of the Waimeas, I agreed to do so. On hearing of this, many of the electors of this district found fault with me for not coming forward here, And have frequently urged me to give up the suburbs, in order that they might put mo in nomination for Waimea. This I steadily refused to do, on account ■of the promise which I had made to the electors of the Suburbs, when last night, at a meeting at Stoke {where several electors from this district were present), the electors of the Suburbs were prevailed upon to relieve me of my promise to come forward there, in order thsit 1 might become a candidate for Waimea. I had from the first placed myself in the hands of 'che electors, and as it is the wish of so many of them that I should contest your distiict with Mr. Saunders, 1 -consider it my duty to do ko. [ remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, FEDOR KELLING. Ranzau, January 12, 1861. 101. TO THE ELECTORS of the district of ■*- COLLINGWOOD. Gentlemen—Upon my arrival here I learnt that a Requisition numerously signed had been forwarded to me at Nelson, requesting that I would allow myself to be proposed as a Candidate for the representation of this newly constituted Electoral District in the House of Representatives. I thank you sincerely for this invitation. Having been mado aware that a Requisition was in course of signature, 1 at once came over to the District to afford you an opportunity of knowing my views on the various subjects in which you are moat interested, as well as on the important questions which are likely to be brought before the General Assembly at its next meeting. It is unnecessary for me to enter again upon these subjects, after having so fully expressed my views at the meeting which took place here on .Monday last, and after having had the opportunity of personally visiting so many of you in other parts of the District. Should I now be prevented from seeing some of the Electors whom I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, I shall endeavor to do so prior to die day of nomination. I will now only add that should you do me ,tho honor to elect me as your representative, I shall study to give'such votes as would benefit the Colony at large;, and also tend to develope and advance the mineral and i agricultural resources of this important district. I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, A. J. RICHMOND. Collingwood, 26th December, 1860. 21
