(From the Taranaki Herald, August 11.)

Her Majesty's colonial steam sloop Victoria - arrived at the anchorage yesterday morning from the Manukau. We have received our files of Auckland papers to the Bth instant. The General Assembly was opened by the Governor on the 30th ult. The Address of His Excellency will be found in another column. Unexpectedly the reply was adopted by the House of Representatives without discussion. A motion of the Native Minister (Mr. 0. W. Richmond) for leave to introduce a Bill to enable the Govenor, in certain cases, to prevent dealings and communication with aboriginal natives offending against the law, affording the House debating ground on the great topic of the address. Mr. Richmond's speech was in itself a comprehensive history of the circumstances which have led to the present war, and all parties agreed, though some speakers sought to show that the Government were in the wrong, that the war should be prosecuted with vigour and brought to a satisfactory close. In spite of the Governor's caution to Waikato, that a Maori King could not be tolerated, a successor %o Potatau (his own son) has been chosen, and the ceremony of crowning him is to take place this month. In addition it is rumoured on good authority at Auckland that a considerable body of Waikatos are preparing to join the rebels already in arms against the Queen's authority. We understand that instructions have been received to continue the removal of families to Nelson, and Her Majesty's ships on the coast, in the absence of suitable vessels for the purpose, will receive them on board. H.M.S.S. Fawn and Cordelia may be hourly looked for from Manukau. Both ships will land a portion of their men for service on shore.
