OF THE. SAYING " WHAT A SAOcKING BAD HAT YOU*VE GOT."
This phrase, which was very popular some eighteen years ago, is said to have originated as follows :— " When Mr. H.——-, the worthy hat-maker, was canvassing the poorer constituents of the borough of Southwark for their 'sweet voices,'he invariably addressed them in this form: 'I wait upon you, sir, to request the favour of.your vote and interest at the ensuing election. To bribery and corrup-tion—l—will—not—have—-recourse; but, sir, if Why, bless me sir, what a : shocking bad hat you've got ? really, you must allow me to send you a new one. But, sir, as I was about to say, if you can can-; scientiously,'" &c.
