RACING AT PAEROA

SWANEE AND BALMACARA IN LIMELIGHT CHATRILL’S FIRST REAL TEST (By “Old Rowley”) With divisions in the Waihi Stakes, the Karangahake Handicap, and the Netherton Plate, the Ohinemuri Jockey Club will have its work cut out to keep the programme to schedule to-morrow, when it stages its summer meeting on the Paeroa racecourse. The club is fortunate in receiving excellent acceptances for other events, particularly the open handicap races. As was to be expected the Freyberg Gold Cup has set punters and students of form and breeding a tricky problem and there is unlikely to be any clear cut favourite. Whatever the verdict on the day, it seems certain that Swanee and Foxfable will enter calculations. Mr D. Blackie’s Foxbridge mare gave such an encouraging display at Pukekohe that it is quite logical to expect she will continue to improve. Foxfable, whose track efforts this week have been full of dash is a type likely to carry on. However, one of the most promising of those engaged is Balmacara, the aged son of Phaleron Bay—Wyndale, whose first real trial over distance this season was at Pukekohe, when he ran fourth. This was' only his third outing since his return from a long spell. Balmacara has been a difficult horse to keep right, but he is.a genuine galloper—last year he' ran second to Regal Praise at this meeting. The lightweights, Calibrate and Biassed will have a following, and the topweight Conspiracy will retain his many supporters. • Turning to the Shaw Handicap, we find matters much the same, although in some quarters High Glory’s performance at Waipa is considered good enough to make her the logical choice. This imported mare had three wins in four starts last season, each accomplished in handsome manner on easy tracks, her times were 1.22) for six furlongs, 1.328 for seven furlongs and 1.478 for a mile. On Saturday last the seven furlongs was run. in 1.258, Gold Script winning by a length from Dixie, with Princessita being a further two lengths back and High Glory was another couple of lengths away in fourth place. Without detracting from the potentialities of High Glory it is suggested that she has yet to prove herself as a topclass sprinter under summer conditions. Looking at the record of Chatrill it is found that this 4-year-old won three times last season, each time over six furlongs and this season has been placed at every start, winning his last three. He canned 8.11 on the first occasion, won by two lengths and was clocked to do the seven furlongs in 1.278; at his next appearance, he had topweight of 9.6, again had two lengths to spare, and reduced his time to 1.26. Started at Pukekohe, he had the steadier of 9.13, led all the way and was still a • head in front after covering the seven furlongs in 1.268. There are performances which stamp him as a galloper of unusual brilliance and with 7.6, being in receipt of 3 lbs from High Glory he seems to have a definite advantage. Of course neither may be placed, but the above records suggest that Chatrill should do more than ho d his own with most of the field. Rhonddayale, Swift Fox and Gwen Vaals are all proved sprinters who must be considered and of the others, Princess Fair should add considerable interest to the contest if a scratching enables her to get back in the field. Latest reports indicate that the track will be hard and fast when racing, commences at 10.45 a.m. with the Turua Hack Hurdles, the Freyberg Gold Cup is to be run at 2.15 p.m. and the meeting concludes at 4.45 p.m. with the running of the Waikino Hack Handicap. In the final summing up the following horses may attract most attention:— Turua Hack Hurdles, 1 mile, 51 furlongs: Corsair, Tifox, Pola. Waihi Stakes, 3-year-olds, 6 furlongs: First Division: Mahafrid brkt. Master Mentieth, Aroha Spi. Second Division: Lysterfield, Cimtulla, Treasure Fox. Karangahake Handicap, 2-year-olds, 5 furlongs: First Division: Classowa, Miss Hiawatha, Hutton. Second Division: Personage, Burma Raid, Longford". Netherton Plate, 4-year-olds and upwards, 6 furlongs: First Division: Eagle, Stylish Fox, Heroa. Second Division: Tumbleweed, Gay Calorie, Choy Loy. Freyberg Gold Cup, about li miles: Balmacara, Swanee, Foxfable. Hauraki Hack Cup Handicap, li miles: Sanita, Sheba, Contrive. Shaw Handicap, 6 furiongs: Chatrill, Rhonddavale, High Glory. Waikino Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs: Rhett Butler, Good Century, Master Cimbrone. TO-MORROW’S DOUBLE Freyberg Gold. Cup: BALMACARA Shaw Handicap: CHATRILL Those Doubles Tickets! Racegoers who make an investment on the doubles totalisator at Paeroa to-morrow should be careful to retain theii- tickets until the second “leg” has been run; for if it did so happen that the winner of the Freyberg Handicap was not coupled with any horse gaining a place in the Shaw Handicap, then holders of a ticket on one of the placed horses may find they had the right coupling, or if the double had not been successfully coupled, then all investors would have their money refunded less the percentages which are usually deducted from race investments. This is a point to be remembered and passed on.
