PUKEATUA NEWS

DRAMA CLUB PRESENTATION OF THREE-ACT PLAY An audience of over 70 attended the Pukeatua Hall last Wednesday evening when the local Drama Club presented the three-act comedy play “London Wall” by John Van Druten, staging a cast of nine and produced by lan Melntyre. The scenes were laid in the genpral office and rooms of a firm of London solicitors. The story was one in which “Brewer” (Alex Ferguson) an immaculate managing clerk who considers himself experienced in the art of attracting women endeavours to shower his affections on “Pait Milligan” (Vera Mclntyre), a pretty, but young and innocent typiste of the firm, much to the annoyance of “Hec Hammond” (Eric Brant) a young and rather plebian clerk from a nearby office who is Pat’s boy-friend. Realising his plight and inexperience for the situation “Hec” confides in “Miss Janus’ (June Sharrock) senior typist of the firm who herself has been jilted after a seven-year engagement. She in turn dissuades “Pat” from he association with “Brewer.”

The play is highlighted by the presence of “Birkenshaw” (lan Robertson) a' cheeky cockney office boy, whose characterisations !were of no small proportions and also of “Miss Willisden” (Mildred Holmes) a 55-year old timid and slightly unbalanced client of the firm who is constantly changing her will. A climax is reached when “Mr Walker” (Bruce Rumbles) the head of the firm catches “Brewer” assaulting one of the typistes. Two other typistes “Miss Hooper” (Nance Fletcher) and “Miss Buffon” (Rella McGrath) presented humorous dialogue throughout the play.

Those who attended the play described as a very good performance with splendid characterisations and a worthy piece of production. New Post Office Advice has been received through the local Progress League that the Post and Telegraph Department have decided to suspend meantime the installation of rural automatic telephones at Pukeatua and are to erect a new post office which will later incorporate a rural delivery service. The building which will be a temporary but adequate structure will occupy a site opposite to the Pukeatua School on the main highway and will be completed by the end of January, next year. Personal Advice has been received that Mr F. O. Kurth, of Puketua, has been appointed a Justice of the Peace. Mr and Mirs R. A. Anderson, who have been holidaying in Australia, will arrive back in Wellington by the Monowai on Tuesday.
