RECORD BEATEN BY AMOS
SURPRISE TO LOCAL SWIMMING CIRCLES The defeat of F. R. Lucas, the brilliant young Auckland freestyle swimmer, by another Aucklander, W. M. Amos in the 220 yards freestyle swim in the Tepid Baths in Auckland last Saturday night came as a surprise in local swimming circles. Lucas recently took the 880 yards record for the Dominion, and everyone expected to see him win the 220 yards easily Krom Amos. However, ■everyone was surprised not only by Amos beating Lucas, but by the fact that he lopped 6i seconds off the national record for the distance of 6.205. The time now stands at 6.14 seconds for the distance. The time which. Amos elocked puts him an world-class for the distance. Lucas is fairly well-known to Te Awamutu swimmers because of his visits to swimming carnivals here, The last of which he attended at the end of last season. The fact that many records have been broken recently suggests. that the proximity of the British Empire Games and the possibility of being entered for them has urged swimmers on to give of their best.
