Top of the List Notice was received at the Otorohanga County Council last Monday that the County was at the top of the priority list for a Caterpillar grader which should be delivered early in the New Year. Further Buildings at Hospital Tenders • for extensions to the Cam obeli Johnstone maternity ward at the Waikato Hospital and for a 150-bed nurses’ home near the Hockin W.ng were accepted, subject to Ministerial approve , at Monday’s meeting of the board. The amount involved is £275,199. Arrangements will be made for a loan. Taxation Paid on Race Meeting The Waipa Racing Club’s first donation? to the Hon. S. G. Holland, Minister of Finance, amounts to the substantial sum of £7461 16s 8d as a result of taxation levied on Saturday’s Summer meeting at Te Awamutu. The taxation was as follows: Totalisator tax, £3BBl 9s 8d; dividend tax, £3395 18s; stakes tax, £43 14s, and amusement tax, £l4O 15s, a total of £7461 16s Bd. Car Strikes Bank Head injuries were sustained by Mr Allan Laurence Alderson, a carpenter. of Carl on Street, when the car he was driving was involved in an accident. Mr Alderson was driving the car along Lethbridge’s Road, Korakonui on Sunday when the tyre of the right wheel blew out and the car collided with the bank. Mr Aiderson received medical attention. Two passengers in the car were uninjured. Chairman’s Honorarium It was forma.ly approved that the chairman’s honorarium should be increased to £2OO plus expenses, income tax to be paid on half the honorarium, at the annual meeting of the Otorohanga County Council last Monday. It was stated that the previous allowance had been for expenses up to £lOO which had been in force since 1920 and was considered out of date by the Council. Approval of the increase was unanimous.

Shop Lighting During Holidays The attention of business people is drawn to an advertisement that appears elsewhere wherein the Power Board states that community lights will be on every night from Monday, 19th December to Monday, 2nd January, 1950, and shop window lighting will be allowed on late shopping night only during that period. Business people should bear in mind, however, that the relaxing of lighting restrictions will not commence until Monday next.

Honesty Encouraged I At the local race meeting on Saturday an announcement was broadcast that a man’s wallet and a woman’s handbag had been lost in the public enclosure, and asking that the finders would return the lost articles to the Club secretary’s office. The wallet was returned—-empty, but the handbag, containing nearly £2O and papers of value, was handed in with the contents intact. The finder’s reward was a gift of five shillings I

Cleaning of Waikato Hospital An agreement to enter into a new cleaning contract with a commercial firm for a period of three years as from November Ist, 1949, was decided upon by the Waikato Hospital Board on Monday. The new contract provides for a profit margin of 64 per cent., as against 10 per cent, at present. The board would save £Bll a year on the present price, said the chairman. The lady superintendent said more accommodation for employees would be required before it would be possible for the hospital staff to take over the cleaning of the hospital.

Otorohanga County Council The Otorohanga County Council met last Monday under the chairmanship of Mr J. L. Wallis. Councillors Hall, Miller, Grierson, Rothery, Wynyard and Jamieson, with the engineer Mr B. McKenzie and the clerk Mr M. P. Goldsbro were present at the meeting. A welcome was extended to a new councillor, Mr Miller who replied that he realised that he was taking over from a very capable man in Mr Walters and that he had a hard task in front of him to keep up to his predecessor’s standard, but he would do his best. More Assets Than Liabilities In moving that the chairman’s report should be received at the annual meeting of the Otorohanga County Council last Monday, Cr Rothery said that when the County had more assets than liabilities, it was something unique in comparison to other counties, some of which had liabilities of up to £200,000. He attributed tne fact that the County’s finance was sound to the natural advantages such as metal which could be found m adequate quantities within the county. Cr Grierson concurred with Cr Kothery’s remarks.

Racing Club Badges The president, vice-presidents, members of the Committee and the secretary of the Waipa Racing Club on Saturday sported ornate cadges signifying the oifices they hold. The badges which are made of gilt and blue and red enamel have a view of Mount. Pirongia in the centre which is surmounted by the words “Waipa Racing Club.” On the bottom scroll is the name of the office held by the wearer. The badges ane distinctive in design and should be a pleasure to wear. It is the intention of the club to provide life members of the club with a somewhat similar type of badge in the near future. Chairman Re-elected

At the annua* meeting of the Otorohanga County Council last Monday, Mr J. L. Wallis was re-elected chairman by the unanimous approval of the Council. He was nominated by Cr Grierson and seconded by Cr Rothery who stated that Mr Wallis had done a good job of work during the year but he was only half way with ms schemes and he (Cr Rothery) would like to see him bring them to fruition. Iq issuing a vote of thanks to the councillors, Mr Wallis stated that he could only promise to do his best. There had been plenty of arguments in the past, but they were all over and the Council were still good friends and he believed that they had ah learned something during the year.
