HOW THEY ARE EMPLOYED Of the total male Maori population recorded at the 1945 census (50,275) less than one-half (23,132) were actively engaged in any occupation. The most usual occupations were: Farming (8062), followed by general labouring (5924), road, etc., workers (1866), and transport workers (1334); no other occupations claiming as many as a thousand representatives from this race. Of the total female Maori population, 4224 were actually engaged in occupations; of which 1660 in personal service (including hotels <nd domestic) and 993 in farming, were the only figures of any importance. Ohly 348 male >and 574 femlale Maoris were clerical, or professional workers.
