ELECTION RESULTS
EXPECTED TO BE iJNOWN AT EARLY HOUR The final result of the general election will, it is hoped, be known by 10 p.m. on Wednesday. A near pointer is expected by about 9 p.m. More than 200 people will work in the General Post Office, Wellington, where the Chief Electoral Officer will have his headquarters. In the headquarters in the telegraph division rooms will be the master results board, in which progress totals will be shown for an official party, including the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, Press and radio representatives will also be in the rooms. A delay of not more than five minutes between the time a results telegram is lodged at, say, Whangarei and handed to the Chief Electoral Officer is planned, even though the wires will carry more than 20,000 telegrams between 7 and 11 p.m. The service will be speeded by using direct circuits between Wellington and 80 per cent, of the electoral returning officers. Post office staffs, with recent practice on the national referenda, will have more experience on Tuesday after the voting for the four Maori seats. This will be on a comparatively small scale, but the dispersal of polling places will add time to the work.
