AROUND THE BOROUGH

OVERSEER’S REPORT VARIETY OF WORK DONE The report of the Borough Overseer, Mr R. H. Close, as presented to Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council read as follows: The drainage contractors have finished their worst and deepest drain behind the pig pens, and have laid the branch drain througn the rubbish dump in Churchill Street. They have started building the piers across the low-lying land behind the Dairy Factory and further down. Now that the weather is improving both contractors are getting along well. Our own men are making steady progress on the concrete footpaths in Roche, Brady and Bank Streets. We have plenty of work still to do on these jobs and they will keep us going for some time yet. We were able to fill up the holes in the bitumen in some of the streets one day last week. Now that we have fine weather we will be able to repaint the white lines. We have put on two sewer services, one in Paterangi Road and the other in North Street, and also water services. Several leaks in the water pipes have been repaired. We have shifted the rubbish dump to Rocha Street again, but we will still have to put a good deal of earth on the Churchill Street dump. The general maintenance work, the rubbish collection, the cemetery, the cleaning of the saleyards, the cleaning of streets, etc., have beep seen to regularly. Someone ran into the: railing on the Frontier Road Railway bridge and the posts and railing will have to be replaced. No discussion followed.
