The gross average weekly earnings of workers in United States factories rose from 54.47 dollars in mid-Nov-ember to a new record of 55.01 dollars <about £l3 15s) in mid December, according to Department of Labour statistics. The average factory working week was 39.9 hours.

R.S.A. Membership Drops A drop in R.S.A. Dominion membership of 10,000 in a year was indicated in a report to the Wanganui R.S.A. this week. There are 102 associations in New Zealand, with a total membership of 105,207, compared with 115,196 on December 31, 1947. People in Britain will soon be able to talk in a small box, take out a paper disc, and post a spoken “letter” to friends and relatives in any part of the world. The only spoken “letters” so far recorded have been on ordinary discs, which involved difficulties in protecting and posting. The new method will use only a special form of paper, the cost of which will not amount to more than a few pence. It can be folded into an ordinary envelope with no risk of damage. There is thought to be no reason why the magic box —about the size of an average table wireless —should cost more than about £2O.
