OIL-FIRED ENGINES
IN USE BETWEEN FRANKTON AND TAUMARUNUI
SAVING OF COAL FOR HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION
Passengers on the Main Trunk travelling between Frankton Junction and Paekakariki on the limited express during the past fortnight have been drawn by oii-fired engines. About a fortnight ago an oil-fired engine was put on the run between Frankton and Taumarunui and for some time oil-fired engines have been operating between Taumarunui and Paekakariki.
The scheme when completed will provide for oil-burning engines on all expresses between Auckland and Paekakariki. Eleven K-type and 10 J-type engines are being converted to oil fuel at the Railway Department workshops at Otahuhu and Petone. Besides obviating much of the grime and smoke associated with coal engines, the oil burners will have the effect of making greater amounts of coal available for household consumption. The trains are running to the normal timetables.
Some idea of the oil consumption of these engines is gained by the fact that between Paekakariki and Taihape each engine burns 100 gallons of oil.
