SPRING CATTLE FAIR
KEEN DEMAND AT OPARAU PRICES WELL UP TO RULING RATES The annual Spring Cattle Fair was held at the Oparau sale yards on Monday, when a full yarding of cattle came forward in excellent condition and attracted spirited competition from a large bench of buyers from as far north as Papakura and as far south as Taumarunui. The attendance of local settlers was an exceptionally large one.
Prices for all classes of cattle in most cases exceeded vendors’ expectations, and as a result there were few or no passings. Mr Alex Brandon’s entry of three and four-year-old Polled Angus steers came forward in excellent condition and a total clearance was made at prices up to and over £l7. Mr T. B. Laimbeer’s entry of quality good-conditioned Polled Angus yearling steers and heifers was eagerly sought, the steers making up to £lO.
Yearling Jersey heifers and springing heifers were also bright of sale, and dairy bulls were much sought; one of the latter, offered by Mr R. T. Davis, realised £l9. .Fat bullocks were in demand from local and outside competition, and the highest price realised was over £2O. Woolly white-faced miixed-sex hoggets made up to £2. Owing to the bad weather over the week-end, various local settlers were unable to muster and yard their cattle—much to their disannointment when they saw the big prices realised.
The Oparau Women’s Institute conducted the refreshment booth and experienced a very busy day. Their arrangements, as usual, were excellent, and courtesy and attention were all that could be desired.
