NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS In order to give a full coverage to district news, and to obviate delays in publication of items of interest, it has been arranged to publish Kawhia district news in each issue, starting next Friday, with publication regularly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Children Entertained Members of the Oparau Women’s Institute entertained the school children at a delightful afternoon tea party on Thursday last, when tffe winners of the l competitions at the recent Flower Show were presented with their prizes.

Interesting Broadcast An Auckland radio station on Sunday last broadcast an interesting address by Mr E. H. Schnackenberg, of Kawhia, the early history of the district and on “ Kawhia During the Wjar Years.” The address in full will be published in these columns as opportunity and space offer. At a meeting of the Kawhia Football Club an account for £5 5s for rent of the playing area during the season just closed was received from the Kawhia Domain Board. Owing to the parlous state of the Club’s finances, it was decided to ask the Board to reduce the amount to £3 3s.

Maori Basektball Team A Kawhia Maori basketball team will meet Ngaruawahia >on Friday next to compete for the Taniwha Ran Cup. The team will be as follows: Mjsses Norah Takiari (captain), Ruth •W'etere, Lena Pouwhare, Nola Paki, Nellie Williams, Rose Parnell, Rita Kerepa, Margaret Thompson, Joy Takiari, and Polly Inia. In the Wihakapirau area of Kawhia county a large slip, described as “the whole hill-side coming down,” has taken place, completely blocking all traffic. It is understood that the county engineer is arranging to have a bulldozer at work, but, in the words of the chairman, Cr E. Smith, it may prove a difficult matter to keep the road open.

Kawhia Golf Club All matches on the Kawhia Golf Club’s links at the week-end were abandoned on account of the very adverse weather conditions. The remaining matches for the captain’s trophy will now be played during the week, and the wind-up of the season will conclude on Sunday next with an all-day tournament.

Food Parcels for Britain The Kawhia branch of the Women’s Division conducted a stall at the Rest Rooms on Saturday last with the object of augmenting their Parcels for Britain Fund. Despite the atrocious weather conditions, a total clearance of home cookery and produce« was effected, with the result that a goodly sum has been added to the fund.

Children’s Fine Gesture A fine gesture by the children attending Oparau School was made last week. Imbued with youthful enthusiasm, they decided to hold a Bring and Buy at the school, and with commendable enterprise and ingenuity made a number of articles which found a ready sale. As a result they netted £3, which has been forwarded to the Crippled Children Fund. Aotea Road

The Works Department intends to resume operations on the formation of the new road at Aotea within the next few weeks, if weather permits. On completion of this task the metalling will be proceeded with, and the Department has asked Kawhia County Council to supply it with the material required during the coming summer months.

Bridge Evening A bridge party in aid of the Parcels for Britain Fund of Kawhia branch of the Women’s Division was held in the Rest Rooms on Wednesday evening last, and proved a very enjoyable affair which realised a tidy sum towards the object in view. Mrs R. McFie was hostess, and the prizes were won by Mrs E. M. Scott and Mr W, B. O’Reiily-Nugent, the latter gentleman also being successful in a competition.

Mid-week Sale Day Farmers in Kawhia South are much interested in the announcement that stock sales held at the Te Kuiti yards will, as from the end. of the year, be held on the Wednesday alternate to the Otorohanga sale. Arrangements to implement this decision are at present being made by the four stock companies selling at the Te Kuiti yards. The alteration means that there will be a sale each Wednesday, either at Te Kuiti or Otorohanga.

Weather in September Weather conditions in Kawhia during the 'month of September could be divided into three chapters. At the start, rainy conditions obtained; then there was a fortnight of spring-like, warm days, followed by a bad break on Tuesday of last week, when the equinoctial gales started, bringing rain and, at times, wind of high velocity. The rainfall for the month was 5.04 inches, bringing the total for the year to date to 44.02 inches. The week-end in Kawhia was boisterous, with the wind reaching gale force and with incessant heavy rain. The temperature was of a “wintry” degree.
