U.S. Factory Wages Peak
The average American factory worker earned a record of 52 dollars 96 cents a week during July, the Bureau of Labour Statistics of the Department of Labour reported on August 28. This average was one penny higher than the mid-June figure. The work week dropped from 40.2 hours in June to 39.8 hours in July. Average hourly earnings in all manufacturing rose from 1.317 dollars to 1.33 dollars. In the durable goods lines, average weekly earnings decreased from 56.32 dollars to 56.25 dollars, and the work week dropped from 40.7 hours to 40.1. This meant that average hourly earnings actually were higher—l.4o4 dollars compared with 1.385 dollars in June. In nondurable goods manufacturing, average weekly earnings rose from 49.39 dollars in June to 49.47 dollars at mid-July. The average work week was reduced from 39.8 hours to 39-5. Average hourly earnings moved up from 1.242 dollars to 1.251 dollars.
