WOOL STATISTICS

THE NEW ZEALAND TRADE OVERSEAS EXPORTS The total value of wool produced in New Zealand in the 1947-48 season, was £37,557,464, its average price per pound was 26.08 d, and the average value per bale was £36.6275. These figures were given by Mr G. A. Duncan, chairman of the New Zealand Wool Disposal Board to the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Wool Board with its Electoral Committee. The following is a summary of wool statistics for the 1947-48 season:— Auction sales (bales, 829,444; private sales in New Zealand, 12,851; growers’ exports, 37,201; Freezing Company’s production, 141,640; fellmongers’ production, 6652; carryover as at 30th June 1948, 20,665; total, 1,048,453, less carry-over as at 30th June 1947, 23,064; making the total production 1,025,389 bales. Average weight per bale, 337,072 lbs; total weight, 345,630,204 lbs. The composition of stocks of New Zealand crossbred wool at June 30th last, was given by Mr Duncan as follows, the figures being for bales:— New Zealand, 502,000; United Kingdom, 298,000; total, 800,000. The destination of wool exported from the Dominion from July Ist, 1947, to May 31st, 1948, was shown to be as follows:—United Kingdom, 516,099 bales; Australia, 28,929; Belgium, 30,855; Canada, 32,802; China, 22; Denmark, 9739; Egypt, 1692; Eire, 421; Finland, 109; France, 165,396; Germany, 43,731; Holland, 42,645; India, 576; Italy, 11,388; Morrocco, 4118; Norway, 2551; Russia, 39,524; South Africa, 98; Sweden, 9511; U.S.A., 52,056; Poland, 1062; Switzerland, 795; Spain; 136; Czechoslovakia, 264; Northern Ireland, 17; Yugoslavia, 389; Algeria, 594; Bulgaria, 300; Greece, 362; total, 996,181. Shipments of stock wool to the United Kingdom, 185,544, making a grand total of 1,181,725.
