ROUNDING CORNERS

FACTORS IN REDUCING DANGER GREATER VISIBILITY ADVOCATED That greater visibility and the sealing of the whole width of the streets in the vicinity would do more to make certain corners less dangerous than rounding such corners, seemed to be the opinion of councillors present at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council. A discussion arose when a recommendation from the Works Committee that the work of rounding the corners at the corner of Carlton and Sloane. Streets be put in hand at an early date, was before the council as a whole. The Mayor considered the dangerous nature of the corner could be lessened by having the whole of the width of the street bitumised. Cr Babbage said that there were a number of other bad corners in the borough. Wherever a corner was rounded it tended to increase the speed of motorists. What was needed at such corners was an improvement in the visibility which would lessen the attendant danger. (Cr Babbage instanced the corner at Mahoe and Mutu Streets in support of his contention. The Mayor agreed with Cr Babbage. Cr Hopping expressed the opinion that often slow moving traffic could be more dangerous than speed. The whole surface should be sealed and the corner rounded. The recommendation of the committee was adopted.
