END OF SERVICE

VETERAN TASMAN FLYINGBOAT Next Sunday the Tasman Empire Airways’ veteran flying boat, “Aotearoa,” which is being withdrawn from service after seven years of accidentfree commercial flying, will complete its service in this part of the world with five flights around the Hauraki Gulf, carrying Aucklanders to whom the regular coming and going of the “Aotearoa” has long been a familiar sight. So far as is known, R.M.A. “Aotearoa” was the second to last Empire flying-boat remaining in the service. She has crossed the Tasman from Auckland to Sydney 442 times, and has flown 1,230,000 miles, carrying some 6000 passengers, including many statesmen, military leaders, and overseas celebrities. “Aotearoa” has earned a fine reputation for unfailing regularity and reliability, and her withdrawal from service has been made necessary only by the difficulty of obtaining spare parts for a flyingboat of her type.. The “Aotearoa” will be replaced by R.M.A. “Auckland,” and the company hopes to increase operation schedules to eight return services weekly, providing transport between New Zealand and Australia for over 450 passengers regularly each week.
