SALES OF LAND

REPORT BY SOUTH ISLAND FIRM “During the last 12 months there has been a steady and unsatisfied demand for all classes of farming properties, with the’ exception’ of high back country, and numerous sales have been completed at satisfactory prices,” says the Annual Review issued by a South Island firm. “Small holdings handy to town ' are much sought after, and are readily sold, provided the improvements are in fair order. The demand for dairyingland capable of 30 to 40 cows has exceeded the properties available for sale, and any property is a quick seller.” *

Mixed properties ranging from 150 acres to 400 acres and holdings of 1000 to 1500 acres of tussock hills, with enough ploughable’ flat to fatten surplus stock, were readily saleable. Straight-out tussock blocks and back country holdings were difficult propositions and change of ownership of those properties by way of sale and purchase was seldom made under present conditions. Problems of the high country sheep farmers, accentuated in recent years by increasing costs and the shortage of experienced musterers and other necessary labour, would soon be thoroughly investigated by the Sheepfarming Industry Comr.ission which was recently appointed. In future it was hoped that back country owners would obtain sufficient relief in rent and general conditions to enable them to carry on successfully.
