THE ROTARY CLUB
LAST NIGHT’S MEETING AID FOR BRITAIN CAMPAIGN The Te Awamutu Rotary Club held their weekly meeting in the Regent Lounge last night. The president Mr V. A. De Coek presided over a satisfactory attendance. Apologies were received and sustained on behalf of the Rev. L. F. Gunn, Messrs A. J. Sinclair, Joseph Sterritt, R. Marsh, R. Salmond. N. Dixon. The president welcomed Mr A. G. Warburton, the guest speaker, and Mr Warburton was given a real Rotary welcome by members. The president intimated that District Governor Reg. Gambrill (Gisborne) would visit the Te Awamutu Club on the 25th of this month. Mr De Coek appealed for a full attendance of members on that night.
At the previous meeting Mr K. S. Kelly proposed that steps be taken, by way of regular stipulated sums, per member, per week, to ensure a regular flow of parcels to Britain. The proposal was then deferred to enable the Board of Directors to consider the question. Last night the president announced that it had been so considered and the directors felt that rather than a definite amount being stipulated it be left to each member to donate what sum he chose. Mr De Coek then moved that the recommendation of the directors be adopted. It was seconded by Mr H. G. Babbage.
Mr Kelly pointed out that there were other sources through which a member could contribute, and they might think that if contributing in that way they had done their best. Mr Kelly then moved as an amendment that each member contribute two shillings per meeting night. On the amendment being seconded by Mr F. Parsons, it was put to the meeting and on a show of hands it was declared lost. The motion was then put and carried.
Mr W. J. Craik reported that he and Mr R. Marsh had attended the Charter meeting of the Whakatane Club. The meeting was highly successful and enjoyable. Any members of the local club who happened to be in Whakatane on a Tuesday would be made welcome at the mid-day luncheon meetings which were held on that day. Past District Governor Blair Tennant, who was present, sent greetings to the Te Awamutu Club. An enjoyable community sing, led by Mr R. C. Judd, followed. The customary singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
