ADVANCED STUDY

SCHEME TO ASSIST DAIRY EMPLOYEES Science was playing an ever increasing part, particularly in farming and more and more as food production was intensified, said Mr W. E. Scott, Government representative on the Dairy Board, at the Dominion Dairy Conference on Friday in presenting a report recommending' a scheme to give employees in" the industry a better opportunity to attend courses of study. It was recommended that the Dairy Board and the Government should each annually contribute £l3OO for the provision of bursaries to enable carefully selected young men to undertake courses in the manufacture of dairy products at the Massey Agricultural College, and that the awarding of the bursaries be made contingent on students remaining in the industry for at least a stipulated period. The amount would provide 25 bursaries for students annually entering upon dairy diploma courses and one annually for students to take a university degree course in dairy science. Under the proposal .students would bear one-third of the cost of the courses in addition to the loss of earning capacity, which would be a reasonable sacrifice for the student to make. The conference adopted the report and authorised the Dairy* Board to implement it,. providing the Government would grant the amount necessary as its share in maintaining bursaries.
