GOLF TOURNAMENT

WAIPA CUP TO R. GLADING A. MURRAY AND A. SHAW TIE FOR PROFESSIONAL STAKE The golf tournament promoted by the Te Awamutu Golf Club and conducted during the week-end was a notable event and a -big attraction in the activities which serve to promote civic welfare. This tournament brought golfers to Te Awamutu from all parts of the North Island and the club thus served in the wider sphere of com-

munity progress. For it was clear during the progress of the tournament that the reputation of Te Awamutu was enhanced by the favourable knowledge gained by the visitors. There were 117 players—lB in the professional match. The prize money of £l5O was keenly contested in some briliant play. The brilliance of the play was revealed in the faet that no less than 84 cards were returned on single figures. R. Glading’s win was a popular and well-deserved one. He did four rounds of golf recording one under par. Andy Shaw showed that he was back to old form by carding 71 in the morning. In all it was a brilliant exhibition and there was much interest in the play throughout. The course was in excellent order, the greens in particular calling for much comment. Some of the visitors regarded them the best in New Zea-

land. The club’s hospitality was also well recognised by the visitors. It was jokingly remarked, and generally conceded, that the only blemish was the weather on Sunday morning—the club for its part having so arranged all details that no other criticism could offer.

Prior to the presentation of the trophies, Mr H. Babbage (president) welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that all had enjoyed themselves. He also particularly thanked the ladies for the work they had done by catering for the two days, a remark heartily endorsed by all present.

Mr A. Shaw returned thanks on behalf of the professional golfers, and said they had thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. Hie also expressed thanks to the ladies and ot Mr W. J. Craik, secretary of the Tournament Committee, who had done everything possible for the pleasure of the visitors. On behalf of the professional golfers he made a small presentation of Mr Craik as a. mark of appreciation of the good work he had done. Mr G. Gladding spoke on similar lines on behalf of the amateur visitors.
