MR MALONEY AGAIN
Sir, —I am at a loss to decide whe- ,
ther the remarks of “Democrat” regarding Russia as a Fascist regime amuse me or arouse in me a certain amount of sympathy towards him. As regards Mr Maloney, “Democrat” is either unaware of, or conveniently overlooks, the fact that Mr Maloney’s remarks have been repudiated by several people of note, including Professor R. M. Crawford (Professor of History, Melbourne University), who served two years with the Australian Legation (and incidentally lived in Russia eight years prior to this), w’ho categorically denied the “generally misleading” statements of Mr Maloney; Miss Irene Saxby, official archivist on Mr Maloney’s own staff; and the celebrated author, Edgar Snow*. However, it is “Democrat’s” remarks concerning Fascism which interest me. He implies in no uncertain manner that Fascism, and Socialism as in Russia to-day, are identical. How does he explain, then, why Hitler and all Nazis were so fanatically anti-communist and antisoviet ? How, if Germany was socialist under Hitler, does he explain the fact that there existed in Germany such huge cartels and monopolies as I. G. Farbenindustrie, Dupont Chemical Trust, Unilever Ltd., and the famous Krupp armament works ? Does he deny that such cartels are products of what “Democrat” describes as “ the free competitive system ” carried to the very extreme ? Is not Soviet communism founded to some degree on the Trades Union movement which under Fascism is illegal, thus depriving workers of their only protection ? Fascism is an extreme of capitalism, founded on aryanism, aggression, and anti-Semitism. Did not Mr Churchill on 3rd September, 1938, in an article in Collier’s, describe Hitler as the man who “ revolted against Marxist catchw'ords, and he (Hitler) was convinced that socialism and international Jew- ' ry were the two dangers that he, a : new r Siegfried, was called to com- i bat ” ? In conclusion I would remind , “Democrat” that the system in Rus- j sia is the nearest approach to “equal- j ity in a classless society” yet i achieved, and is founded on co-oper- i ation, collectivism, and humanism, as | opposed to the competition, individualism, and animalism of the capitalism he advocates.—l am, etc., MARCUS AURELIUS.
