MR MALONEY AGAIN

! Sir,—rMr Maloney, the Australian ! Minister to Moscow, who lived there | for three years, tells us that Russia ;is a Fascist State. Of course it I always was, but what is so important ! is that for many years the world has ; been deluding itself in imagining J that Russian Socialism was the very j opposite of Fascism. There is not one i British Socialist writer or politician 1 who did not hail the Russian experi- • ment as true Socialism and the hope of civilisation. Socialists also for i many years saw Hitler’s Socialism as i true Socialism. George Lansbury, i who was leader of the British Labour ; Parts till 1935, wrote in his book in : 1936, “History will record Herr Hitler as one of the great men of our time; simple in his mode of living.in which he is in tune with the Soviet Communists and other truly Socialist leaders.” Likewise they regarded Socialist Tito as the man who would bring democracy to Yugoslavia. It j matters not where Socialism or na,t- -; ionalisation is put into operation, j whether it be Poland, Czechoslovakia, j Hungary or anywhere else, the des- | truction of all political freedom auti omatically follows and rule is by . fear. It would be difficult to find a | British Socialist writer who does not I disclose that to implement Socialism ■ dictatorial power must be vested in a Socialist cabinet. How amazing it i is that we delude ourselves into the belief that any kind of Socialism can be other than Fascism for it is an eternal truth that democracy can exist only under an economic system based on private ownership plus the free competitive system.—l am, etc., DEMOCRAT
