Flood Of Patents In reply to a question from Mr Broadfoot, the acting-Minister of Justice (Mr Jones), in Parliament, outlined steps to overcome delay in the Patent Office, and emphasised that duiing the past year there had been an extraordinary increase -in the number of applications for patents of a highly technical nature filed in the office. Discussing the reply, Mr Broadfoot said he understood there were about 4000 applicati6ns in arrear, and the long and unnecessary delay in dealing with such applications was a source of great worry to the applicants. Spirit of Red. Cross Conventions Giving his impressions of the international Red Cross conventions held recently at Oxford and Geneva, Mr G. C. White, chairman of the Dominion council of the Red Cross Society stated at a function in Christchurch that although a number of differences were apparent among delegates of the various nations attending, the predominant aims were for world •wide unity and co-opeuation. “On the whole, the conferences lived up to the ideals of the Red Cross, and if there were some troubles they were often caused by misunderstandings arising from differences in the languages spoken,” said MT White- It was very difficult for an international convention to run smoothly when the speeches of the representatives had to be translated by interpreters, who could not always present the precise meaning of the speakers’ words.
