ROLL OF HONOUR

UNVEILED AT TE RAHU There was a very good attendance of residents and friends in the Te Rahu Hall last Sunday afternoon on the occasion of the unveiling of a Roll of Honour prepared to commemorate the names of local lads who had served overseas in the recent World War. The scroll was a very fine sample of Te Awamtltu craftsmanship and contained the names in fancy gold lettering of twenty-seven men, all of whom had returned with the exception of two. The Hall had been suitably decorated for the occasion; on one side of the stage was the Te Rahu School Roll of Honour in memory of those who had served in the Great War 1914-18, and on the other side of the stage was an exact copy over-hung with the Union Jack. The gathering was presided over by Mr C. J. Flay and associated with him on the platform were the Rev. M. Sullivan, as a representative of the Te Awamutu clergy, and Mr B. Malone, president of the Te Awam/utu R.S.A. Both Mr Sullivan and Mr Malone delivered very fine and appropriate addresses, pointing out that it was very appropriate that such a Roll of Honour should be provided to perpetuate for all time the memory of those who had risked all for their King and Country; and urging one and all to strive for high moral and Christian ideals to worthily use the victory and peace bought at such a high cost.

The privilege of unveiling the Roll of Honour was in the hands of the president of the R S.A. and was performed very effectively and appropriately. Mrs M. Sullivan then gave a very fine rendering of the vocal solo, “Let us Now Praise Famous Men.” On behalf of the settlers of Te Rahu, the chairman then expressed appreciation of the great assistance rendered by Rev. and Mrs Sullivan and Mr B. Malone who had helped to make the occasion such a memorable one. The function closed with the singing of the first verse of the National Anthem, Mrs Martin-Smith officiating at the piano.
