HONEY A CURATIVE

INTERNAL AILMENTS RESEARCH IN RUSSIA Curative properties of honey, one of the oldest of all folk remedies, were proved during' the war when it was used ■ successfully as a salve on slow-healing wounds and as an internal mledicament. Research carried out by the Russian Institute of Agriculture in cooperation with 40 medical institutions throughout the country has shown, for example, ■ that honey is an excellent germ killer. Tested in four hospitals and an out-patient clinic in the treatment of slow-healing' wounds, not an adverse result was registered while, in 90 per cent, of the patients, a sharp improvement was brought about. Honey taken internally has proved favourable in case® of jaundice, chronic dyeentry, swellings due to heart and, kidney ailments and many other diseases. It has alyo produced good results in difficult cases of osteomyelitis of large bones. Of considerable interest is use of honey, iq treating ulcers of the stomq aeh and duodenum. According to Dr. I. Levenson, chief of the thereapeutic department of Basmannaya Hospital, Moscow, 29 patients received honey treatment. They were- mostly between the ages of 30 and 50 and had suffered from ulcers for between three and ten years. For ten days they were given 500 grains of honey daily without any other changes in the diet usually prescribed in ulcer eases. Nearly ail patients felt better on the fourth or fifth day of treatment. By the end of ten days, 20 had no pain and the remaining nine felt much less pain. Repeated x-ray examinations showed that all visible symptoms of the ulcer had disappeared completely in seven out of 19 such cases and partly so in six.
