LABOUR SURVEY

SOUTH AUCKLAND DISTRICT “ BUOYANT POSITION ” Returns for the fifth industrial group under survey by South Auckland district of the National Employment Service have been completed by the district employment, officer, Mr H. L. R. Read. Only three more groups have to be dealt with before the first survey is complete. iSo far a total of 664 industrial units have been reviewed, comprising 6388 males and 1677 females, a total of 8065 workers. Vacancies in these groups were recorded as 215 male and 132 female workers. “ The position regarding employment is quite buoyant,” said Mr Read in an interview.

The latest group under survey comprises 250 units employing 1181 males and 1023 femlales, a total, of 2204. Industries covered include bush saw-milling, quarrying, joinery factories auctioneering;, accountancy, agencies generally, hotels and board-ing-houses, restaurants, milk bars, laundries, dry cleaners, theatres, cinemas, dance halls, cabarets, billiards saloons, and private and maternity hospitals. One of the largest numbers of workers reviewed comes under the auctioneering and general agencies group, in which 314 males and 206 females, a total of 520, are employed. The group containing hotels, boarding houses, milk bars, and restaurants is the largest, with a. total of 835 workers, comprising 310 males and 525 females.

In the group under consideration the total vacancies are 69 males and 79 females, a total of 148. The group which includes hotels has the largest proportion of vacancies, eight males and 34 females being required. Private hospitals and maternity hospitals require only six females. The agency group, being of a static nature, requires only two males and one female.

“ The last group returns are to be completed on 28th June,” said Mr Read. He added that employers had been co-operating very well, and only 16 were outstanding.
