RACING AT PUKEKOHE

SPLENDID ACCEPTANCES RECEIVED G-. . f-FRANKLJN CLUB ?ON. ITS ’• HOME - ; ■ ! course v again-’ ■; : ■■■; f V . - ■;; J?;-:.':;.,’ ■* V ’ ;i^By' t .“-Old jßowley’’)) ? After- racing at' Te .Rapa; during the war ygars, the ; Franklin 1 Racing Clubwill'once.a’gain -stage-a meeting on its own course .at Pukekohe. tomorrow, when a winter meeting will be held there. The Club has not been idle during its enforced absence from the course, 'arid a, far-seeing and energetic committee has made many improvements which should be appreciated i|y the public. Situated within easy distance of Auckland, the Pukekohe'Club’s popularity is sure to increase as. normality returns, and it will occasion no surprise to' see it blossom into one of the leading country racing clubs of the North Island. Hack steeplechasers are catered for in the Papakura Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, of £3OO, about 2J miles, in which Betterman is top-weight. The main open event on the programme is the President’s Handicap, of £500,. l i miles. A “field of ; sixteen is engaged,. such.. gb<sd performers as Verdaht,' Bonny Pay, Ruling Mastei-, South Riding,. and Honora being included Others which may attract attention are La Fillette, Batal, Black Ace, Observatory, and Mollie Bon. I Only nine have accepted for the Qnewhero Hurdles, but a fair class ft hurdler appear? to be plresent, Hunto and The Doer being star jumpers, while Whirlwind Star showed much promise earlier. jErnada is a likely improver, but the distance may be a little short for him. Nothing has schooled better than Slavonik in recent work-outs, and a reproduction of this form in a race would make him very hard to beat. Irish Fox has better race form than either Titirangi or Waiting, although the latter is reported to be schooling boldly. Fourteen are accepted for in the Paerata Handicap, and among them appear the names of some very smart sprinters. Black Beret heads the list, and this Diatomous gelding has few peers in winter going; he is very fit at the present time. Regal March does not appeaT unduly after his disappointing showing in the last start or two, and Prince Revel failed to stay on after getting away quite well in his latest outing. Killeymon is at an age when too much improvement cannot be expected in a sprinter, but he went a good race at Ellerslie last Saturday, ad in his present form may be good enough to upset the opposition. Park Royal, another which raced well last week-end, is very smart over six, and is at a nice age to make an improved showing. Royal Master has not, in the past, handled winter going, his best performances being registered on top of the ground; therefore he must be taken on chance. Autoscore failed to flatter at Ellerslie, and is getting on in years as sprinters go, while Hunting Camp has never proved oversolid, although a smart beginner with plenty of pace for five furlongs. Ink Spot’s form is not attractive, and Yorkish seems to be a moody sort which cannot be depended on. Ramlpede is a light-weight prospect, and Bonny Grey, an honest sort of hack, should make her presence felt. Yes Tor is doing good track work, but has poor form in races. Hacks have been well catered for, with the L’ukekawa Hack Handicap of seven furlongs opening the programme and the Otaua Handicap, six furlongs, which has been divided. A ten furlongs event in the Harrisville Hack Handicap caters for staying hacks; and then, last race of.the day, is the Jubilee Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, which has attracted a big field.

The weather would only need to be fine on the day to ensure a very enjoyable gathering of racing enthusiasts. The first race is to start at 11.5 a.m., and the last event will begin at 4.5 p.m. The system of betting in operation will be win and place, and, like all country clubs, the Franklin Club will propably find the manual totalisator hardly capable of expeditiously ■ handling investments of the crowd which is sure to be present. Among the Favourites Recent form should work out pretty well, but there is always an element of surprise present, and it is quite possible that on the Pukekohe course there will be an upset or two. However, the following horses have been attracting attention, and may be among the favoured on the day:— Pukekawa Handicap, 7 furlongs: Antipay, Waterloo Bridge, Royal Silver. Papakura Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, about 2i miles: Yank, Bisquit, Toronto. • Otaua Handicap, 6 furlongs: First division; Hoornui, Regal Scot,

Nanakea. Second Division: Our Dave, Crystal Ring, Skymaster. President’s Handicap, 11 miles: Rul-

ing Master, Honora, La Fillette. Onewhero Hurdles, 1 mile 7 furlongs 180 yards: Whirlwind Star, Har-

ris Tweed, Irish Fox. Harrisville Hack Handicap, 11 miles; Silver Wedding, Sweet Baffles, Mild Flutter. Paerata Handicap, 6 furlongs; Park Royal, Black Beret, Hunting Camp. Jubilee Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs: Bambion, Victory Vaals, To-night.
