PROGRESS OF STATE SCHEME There is one house for every 3.9 people in New Zealand to-day, compared with one house for every 4.18 people in 1936, according to figures given by the Hon. R. Semple. Mr Semple said that since 1936 58,000 houses had been built in New Zealland and that the population had increased by 174,000 in the same period. • Pointing out that the goal was 12,000 new houses a year, Mr Semple said 16,000 carpenters would be necessary. The present number of carpenters was 7938.1 Mr Semple said the total number of State houses built up to the end of April was 20,198. Contracts had been let for another 4758, and 3373 were actually under construction on April 30th. On that date 4393 men were employed on State housing constuuetion, and the staff of the department numbered 572.
Altogether 45,888 building sections had been bought for State housing.
