TRADE WITH INDIA

AUSTRALIA’S OPPORTUNITY “FORTUNE TO BE MADE” “Australia must send token shipments to India and the East within the next few months if she is to establish an export market after the present controls have been relaxed.” This statement was made by Mr John Davis, a Melbourne business man, who recently returned from a business trip to India, Ceylon and Singapore. “A fortune is to be arranged in the East, and we must arrange' quickly to benefit from, the colossal possibilities which will soon develop here,” he said. “It will not be long before both Great Britain and the United States turn to the East, and if Australia is to comnjete with those countries she must establish a reputation for good quality before it is too late.” Mr Davis considers that Australia can profitably export to India woollen and leather goods and food products. Another commodity with very great possibilities is Australian-made cosmetics. Mr Davis said that practically any foodstuffs could be sold in India because of the intense shortage, although he considered this state of affairs would not exist a few years hence, when competition increased. The lines which would have the greatest market would be dairy produce, wheat products, and also processed foodstuffs. “At present,” he ddded, “Australia is losing a national fortune, because its powers of production will not settle down and start producing goods on a large scale. If Australia is to make any appreciable stand in overseas markets the rate of production must double and even treble its present proportions, so as to meet forthcoming demands.”
