TEACHING ESPERANTO
INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE USE AT SCOUT JAMBOREE Mr D. R. Kemslcy, of Cambridge, who is a student of Esperanto, has forwarded the following article taken from the “Wellington County Scout Gazette”: “The forthcoming World Jamboree will take place in France in August, 1947. Esperanto will be one of the languages used and all prospectuses and programmes will be translated into the international auxiliary language. It is the intention of the New Zealand Esperanto Association to make contact with the local Scout organisation to assist Scouts who intend to travel in acquiring a speaking knowledge of Esperanto. “The principal reason why so much time and money will be spent on the International Jamboree in France next year is to promote good fellowship and understanding between the youth of all nations. This ideal cannot be fully realised unless you are in a position to talk to the thousands of boys war-like friction is one of the gravest who will be there and who do not speak our language. Although without being in a position to do this there is not a doubt whatever you will receive benefits which cannot be measured in £.s.d., thousands of boys will come away from the jamboree without achieving in full the ideal which Baden Powell saw in Scouting. “Wars are largely the result of misunderstanding" and suspicion—we understand the people of Englishspeaking countries such as Americans, Canadians, Africans. Do we understand how the Turks, Chinese, Japanese, Germans, live, work and play ? In six months, any boy can learn to talk, read and write in Esperanto—the international language sponsored by B.P.—and at only a small cost.” Mr Kemsley will be pleased to pass on any further information concerning Esperanto to interested Scouts and others.
